Another failure. The artificial intelligences that I have created are far too simple. They cannot adapt to situations beyond what they are programmed to accept. They merely shut down. It's infuriating! I've come so far in my work… but the final piece of this puzzle eludes me! How can I create a truly thinking growing artificial intelligence if it cannot adapt beyond its own code?

Perhaps I was wrong in my assumptions that it could be done, or merely that I could accomplish such a fantastic feat. Well… the work that I have accomplished is still useful. Now our society lives in comfort that has yet to be rivaled. Still… I would have liked to climb that last mountain. Pity.

I came across the most fantastic discovery in the forest today. A metallic alloy that I have yet to identify. It appears to have a naturally liquid form, and I have detected trace elements of organic compounds in this alloy. They could be simply from the floor of the woods, but I have high hopes.

Who knows? Perhaps this could even offer a way for me to overcome that blasted coding problem I have with the AI's.

Remarkable. The alloy is organic! Through means by which I cannot even guess at, this metal compound is, or should I say, was alive. The organics I detected were parts of the compound. They formed a basic nervous system, along with a highly flexible muscular and skeletal system. As far as energy regulation, it appears as though the metal itself is photosynthetic, pulling energy from light and heat.

But the most fantastic piece of data I have found by far is the main neurological controlling area. I would describe it as a brain, except that there is no actual matter. Instead, the whole body seems to be controlled by a mass of energy, a sort of soul. Hmmm… An energy-based controlling mechanism… If I could synthesize the effect…

After a long series of tests, I believe I have uncovered a way to resuscitate the metallic entity. The life support system will have to be fused to a part of the metal, and could not be taken off with out immediate death of the host, but should work fine. After the entity wakes, I will perform more tests. To uncover just how intelligent this being is, how its body works, possibly its culture, or home world.

Regardless, the current equations show it to take approximately 5 days for the life support system to fully awaken the entity. So, that shall be when my next entry will be.

Oh dear. The… being was less hospitable than I had expected. Evidently, its species places a great deal of value on physical appearances, specifically symmetry, and the life support system offended it greatly. I suppose it is bit ugly…

Regardless, the being smashed up a great deal of my home. Fortunately, my lab was not among the casualties. The entity is currently in the top floor, on last observation it appeared to be meditating. I don't really know what it is doing, or trying to do up there, but it is still close enough to my lab for a scan. Hopefully, there will be the data I require.

This is the machine he uses. Interesting… he sees me as a science project. AI? Artificial intelligence? What tricks of chaos is he trying to bring about? Still… perhaps I can best spread order throughout this chaotic region with his assistance. I will wait… for now.

Interesting. The data available on this model appears to be off. No matter. The last two days have been filled with breakthroughs! DOM, as the entity refers to itself, exited its reclusive region and communicated with me. Although his language skills in our tongue are lacking to say the least, he, I believe that DOM is a he, although I have no relevant evidence, seems to be quite eager to learn and so inquisitive, always trying to find out whatever he can. He spends most of his time studying the astrometrics logs, attempting to find his way home, as he says.

Yes, DOM is an alien. And the flexibility that was hinted at in the preliminary findings is nothing to what he has demonstrated. Complete physical control. He can alter his form into nearly any other at will. It is quite impressive.

As far as his culture, DOM has been rather tight lipped. Either avoiding the subject, or simply ignoring the question. Perhaps it is rude in his culture to speak of home. Still, I do wish he would talk about it. There is so much we can learn from each other.
