Dr. Ikuro Kodama was the DRC specialist in geology and structural integrity.
Born October 5, 1957, he graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts in mechanical engineering technology, and went on to earn a Doctorate in geology from the University of Southern California.
Kodama was a friend of Dr. Watson's from their time together in the teaching profession. He was first invited to visit D'ni in 1994, and was the third of the founding members of the DRC. He served from 1997 to 2004 as overseer of Phase One (Initial Mapping) and Phase Two (Structural Analysis) restorations of all structures and Ages. It was Kodama that introduced Michael Engberg to the rest of the people who became members of the DRC, such as Dr. Watson.
In 2004, he served as co-chairman of the DRC after Dr. Watson left. Kodama returned to D'ni in 2006 when Cate Anderson secured new funding, and took up his position of overseeing phases one and two on all projects again. One of the last projects he was involved with was working to evaluate and restore the Age of Laki'ahn.
Better known to explorers as Dr. K, he was a no-nonsense man who preferred to stay behind the scenes and get the job done. He was regarded as very blunt, especially when publicly expressing his dislike for Jeff Zandi's allowing people into the Cavern before the DRC officially opened it. However, after the DRC disbanded and he took the Path of the Hand journey for himself, Dr. Kodama seemed to be more approachable and forthcoming with information about the restoration efforts.
He returned to the surface when the DRC abandoned the cavern in 2007.
