The D'ni had a distictive culture that served them reasonably well for over 9,000 years. Much of it was derived from the society they'd branched off from, that of the Ronay of Garternay.
For most of their history, they were governed by an absolute monarchy, although the king had powerful advisors and was required to keep a prophet in his personal staff. The different kings did not always listen to the prophet's advice, but there was always one in his retinue.
When Kerath was coronated, no one but he knew that he'd be the last king of D'ni. His reign was not marked by great works. Instead, he immediately and tirelessly began a campaign to convince the D'ni to change their form of government into a representative council. His ultimate success in doing so is why he's considered one of the greatest kings they ever had; it was a monumentally difficult task to convince the whole of D'ni to throw aside millennia of tradition and habit.
